  • 8:40 stop prentending that these mega corporations, which are basically monopolies, are loosing money and can't pay staff because of the shortage. There's a shortage because they are selling more chips than ever and on top of that they are selling them at a huge markup. This markup isn't being used to pay employees it's being used to pay Jensen's new private jet and his new mansion in the bahamas.

  • That's what you get when you've de-industrialized the West and, through the combination of a broken patent system and a criminal lack of oversight on behalf of anti-monopoly authorities, the entire gaming/3D graphics market ends up depending on a duopoly that has every reason to keep its wares scarce.

  • I think the US should start building fabs here at home right now. I know TMSC is building a fab out in Arizona, but we should have multiple fabs. Taiwan is the most powerful island nation on earth because of the high concentration of semiconductors. We had oil wars, now we have semiconductor and rare earth wars. If China really wants to take on Taiwan and the US over it's semiconductor business, we are in some shit. For national security, I think we need to bring this back home, and charge tariffs on American companies that fab outside the US.

  • The idea that we need to buy new crap each year just to play the same games at higher prices is stupid. Now that the video card industry is taking a break, we can save our money and play good games, not hyped games. I personally hope Nvidia goes bankrupt in it's attempt to move the gamer segment to steam-gaming and keep only the ultra expensive high end segment alive. Their CEO already shown his true colors some time back, so we all know what their game is. That being said, the entire AAA game industry is a festering putrid corrupted corporate cash grab that need to go bankrupt as well, and I wish it does. So I'll pass on "stream gaming" and I'll keep my money for couple of years. Go prices, go!

If the PC building community could suck it up for a couple of months and stop buying components we could naturally drop prices and increase availability. Scalpers would lose their shirts and have to shed their ill gotten stock for pennies on the dollar. Human beings just don't have the collective will to hold back on buying shiny things.

    ScottyBallzScottyBallzAcum o Zi
  • If you want to use a good example of chips going to other hardware here is a real list! GAMING CONSOLE's (they require the same die and memory) CELL PHONE'S (they require quad+core cpu's and some sort of gpu/microgpu die!) COMPANY/CORPORATE POS MACHINE'S (a lot of new pos's require decent graphics to run) ANY NEW 4k TV( SAMSUNG/LG/VIZIO and almost all the new tv manufacturer's are using the new graphics dies to make your large format displays compatible with your 100+hz graphics cards) that's just a few to start....stop using automobiles the center consoles on the screens have like 64mb dies and GPU's some are maybe 128 or 256 my friend has 2x12inch kicker's and a LCD screen in his truck my cousin has a brand new dodge with an LCD screen they are not the same chips that go in our graphics cards!!!!

    kimberly mulhernkimberly mulhernAcum o Zi
    • and if you want to know where in the auto industry the chips are actually going too, ill tell you...its going to the people who are locksmith's or to the actual automobile manufacturer's sure but the locksmith that came to reprogram my friends chip for his lock said he paid $3000 for the machine to do it! that's where those chips are going in the automobile industry! they are going to devices that allow full reprogramming of smaller chips and to devices that are used for troubleshooting your vehicle! Your differential chip is probably a 256mb chip jay I would surprised if your center console actually had 32-64gb's of basic memory to store songs or music, on another note I was talking about graphics memory before and now we are on storage! The point is that yeah sure some chips go to these things but not the chips we need for our graphic's cards jay!

  • I can pretty much guarantee you that China is getting all of the silicon in order for the transfer of power to continue. As soon as China gets to where they have all the manufacturing moved over from all other countries The operation will be complete and markets will all of the sudden be back to normal. Keep everybody else down while you finish building yourself up. It's all a smoke screen. Think about it. Company's will make the most profits when they can literally pay pennies for labor and sell the product for the same price or even higher....common sense. Americans demand to high of pay. When a company can pay pennies a day rather than a hundred dollars or more a day to an employee what do you think they will do. Also a country like China doesn't have ANY pollution regulations they that they actually inforce so that is a huge win for a manufacturing company. I am aware it's Taiwan that does the majority of the silicon manufacturing. But China is where EVERYTHING is going. Don't kid yourself......This is a takeover.

  • It’s so crazy to see so many people champing at the bit to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars and the only thing standing between these people spending all of that money and the companies who very much want their money is the fact that they cannot produce enough product to meet the demand. In the west at least, supply shortages and production hinderances are mostly a thing of the past. Of course we get the odd spike in demand and reduction of supply for certain products (mostly daily necessities and the like) during public crises. Think bottled water, toilet paper, canned foods, etc. Still, it’s pretty uncommon and is almost always caused by panic buying and hysteria. This is a different type of problem and one we don’t see very often anymore. These are massive corporations with billions of dollars changing hands each year, huge factories and facilities, tons of resources, etc, and they are absolutely failing to meet the demand for their products. There are many thousands of people who desperately want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on these products but they aren’t able to specifically because the companies cannot produce enough of them. It’s just a weird situation. If I could buy a 3080 at retail price right now, I’d pull out my wallet so fast that it might start a fire. And there are a lot of people thinking the same thing. I’m just amazed that the only thing keeping our money out of Nvidia, AMD, Intel and TSMC’s pockets is their inability to produce enough of what they’re selling.

China is behind the global market crash.. they have almost all manufacturing facilities on planet earth.. they want the world market to crash.. you already see it everywhere.. all companies that have major stakes in technology are getting taken over by Chinese "investors" and then collapse these companies.. they should be INTERNATIONAL INVESTIGATED.. Helder AlmeidaHelder AlmeidaAcum 3 Zile
  • Hey Jay, I've always enjoyed your videos but I think youre missing a huge point on the shortages. Not only is the demand outpacing the supplies, but microchip manufacturing requires huge amounts of water and, it so happens, Taiwan is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in over the past 60 years. I have family in Taiwan and the government is restricting water usage on its citizens by cutting off their supply. While we all want that shiny new RTX 3080, we have to understand we are ultimately part of the problem too. I think it sucks that regular Taiwanese citizens have to suffer while foreigners and gamers remain oblivious to the situation.

I believe, IMO, that it has a lot to do with the scalpers out there, who STILL have these items listed at 2-3 times the MSRP for sale on Ebay. Some of these people have multiple units of each, like I recently saw a listing where the seller had nearly 20 Zotac RTX 3080's stacked up in his listing photo. This is a matter of people running bots to buy the products and hoarding them. I'm all for capitalism, but on high demand items it gets ridiculous.

  • It's not the automobile industry forcing the shortage by needing more processors, it is their sheer money-power that they are willing to use to pay more for the available chips than any other industry. Simple example, if a chip for a car similarily as complex as a PC-CPU would be the same price in both markets, car manufacturers don't care if the chip-price is 300€, 400€ or 1000€. for us consumers it does only matter if consoles, PCs, TVs etc get more expensive. If a 1000€ TV now is 2000€ just because of the chip, we don't want to buy it. If a car is 55.000€ or 56.000€ we don't care if we want to buy a new one. Automotive industry will just increase the prices slightly compared to their base price, get priority when they need chips and will be fine. What we got ahead of us in our future is nothing else than the first true technology-crisis. Not because we are stuck in development, but because capitalism got us into a dead end for now... and for years to come.

  • It would be nice if manufacturers in all industries would take this opportunity to realize that maybe not everything NEEDS to be computerized. Things like the smoker grill on "Glen and Friends" channel should not fail in the middle of a cook because of a firmware update while making jerky. Maybe if we use less chips where they are not needed, we can reduce the demand at least a little.
